Quick Questions with a Hedge Fund, Senior Research Analyst
Our guest today is a senior research analyst who has built their career in the Hedge Fund industry, focusing mainly on bottom-up analyses for long/short investment opportunities across Asia and Japan.
Do you have any physical item or gadget that you find essential to your work?
Bloomberg is essential, also I use 2 wide screen monitors which makes working a lot smoother.
What has been your most impactful resource to learn since graduating your bachelors?
Mentorship, the best way to learn is to learn from the best. Outside of the learning and development of a mentorship, being taught by a known name in the market will add value and credibility to your profile.
How valuable has your MBA been to your career? Is there a “right time” in your career to do an MBA?
My MBA was a nice break. After a few years in Investment Banking I went into it open minded as to what my career could be after, it hasn't necessarily added much to the skills needed for my career but it did open the door to the industry for me.
What 2 pieces of advice would you give a professional joining the HF industry for the first time?
Firstly, finding a mentor I think is invaluable. So if someone is lucky enough to have multiple offers, it is important to value who in the prospective company's you will be able to learn from and get associated with.
Also, find a fund strategy that is right for you.
Why were you interested in joining the Hedge Fund industry?
Initially it was not something on my radar, then during my MBA I got a call from a well known Hedge Fund owner that was looking for a Japanese speaking professional to cover Japan and Asian markets. I was fortunate as I got the opportunity to work with a great mentor.
