A simple way to print PDFs with space for notes

Over the past few weeks, I have been printing out industry articles, job descriptions and market news so I can read away from the screen and make some notes. The problem is that most PDFs are not designed for handwritten notes, you either write in the small margins or use a separate notebook.

So I built a small free web tool called PDF Sidenote:

It turns a normal PDF into a paper-friendly version with space beside each page for handwritten notes.

I originally made it for my own reading, but it can also be useful for people reviewing:

• investment memos

• presentations and pitch decks

• job descriptions

• market reports

• industry articles

• CVs before interviews

For recruiters and hiring managers, one practical use case is printing a CV with space beside it for interview notes.

For investment professionals, it can be useful when reading memos, research, meeting materials or long-form reports away from the screen.

The tool runs locally in the browser, so the PDF is not uploaded anywhere. No account is required.

It has been an interesting experience to build something. It is a simple tool, for anyone who still likes reading and taking notes with a pen, it may be useful.

ここ数週間、業界記事や求人票、マーケットニュースなどを印刷して、画面から少し離れて読みながらメモを取る機会がありました。

ただ、多くのPDFは手書きでメモを取る前提で作られていないため、余白に小さく書き込むか、別のノートを使うことになります。

そこで、PDF Sidenote という小さな無料のWebツールを作りました。

通常のPDFを、各ページの横に手書きメモ用のスペースを加えた、印刷しやすい形式に変換するツールです。

もともとは自分用に作ったものですが、例えば以下のような資料を確認する際にも使えると思います。

PDFはブラウザ上でローカルに処理されるため、ファイルがアップロードされることはありません。アカウント登録も不要です。

実際に自分でツールを作ってみるのは、とても良い経験になりました。シンプルなツールですが、今でも紙とペンで読みながら考えるのが好きな方には、役に立つかもしれません。
