Updated: Sep 3

A selection of recent developments from Japan’s private markets that caught my attention over the past few weeks.
This is not intended to be an exhaustive news roundup. The focus is on private equity, real estate, private credit, infrastructure and renewables, and alternative asset management, particularly developments that may not have received much attention.
News Radar
Boost Capital completes its first leveraged buyout
Boost Capital announced in August that it had acquired MeLife and MeLife Support, which operate Chamber of Commerce computer schools across Japan, from funds managed or serviced by NSSK.
Boost describes the transaction as its first leveraged buyout investment. The acquisition was made through a special purpose company in which Boost’s fund holds 80% of the voting rights, with Z Venture Capital and Atlas Capital participating as co-investors. The transaction also used bank LBO financing.
Earlier in August, Boost also participated as a minority co-investor in the Goldman Sachs-led take-private of Raksul.
Boost was established in 2024 and describes itself as a hybrid VC/PE investment firm.

Kasumigaseki Capital sells Zama data-centre site into fund
Kasumigaseki Capital acquired a data-centre development site in Zama, Kanagawa in August and sold it into a fund, from which it expects to take an asset-management mandate. It is the first project from the Data Center Business Promotion Office established by the company in February.
The site has a signed electricity-use application contract covering 42MW-scale extra-high-voltage receiving capacity, with supply expected subject to the remaining procedures.
Price and counterparty were not disclosed. Kasumigaseki said the sale was already included in its FY8/2026 consolidated earnings forecast, with revenue recognised on settlement.
The company is working on the project with SC Zeus Data Centers, the Japanese subsidiary of Singapore-based SC Zeus Data Centers Pte. Ltd.

Japan’s infrastructure fund market reaches ¥3.1–3.5 trillion
Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Research Institute estimates that Japan’s infrastructure fund investment market reached approximately ¥3.13–3.54 trillion on an asset-value basis as of March 2026.
Private infrastructure funds accounted for around ¥2.80–3.21 trillion, up approximately ¥180–200 billion from a year earlier.
Solar has historically represented the majority of infrastructure fund assets, but SMTRI also recorded a succession of fund formations and investments involving battery storage, as well as data-centre investment by diversified infrastructure funds.
Further grid-scale battery-storage and digital-infrastructure fund activity has also been announced since April.

Two new fund structures around corporate renewable power
Tokyu Land and iGrid Solutions established their second fund for rooftop solar projects under an on-site PPA model in August.
Their first vehicle, established in 2023, had accumulated approximately 73MW of rooftop solar assets as of June 2026. The partners are targeting a further 200MW of development over three years, with approximately ¥10 billion of equity investment planned.
Separately, Nomura Real Estate Investment Advisors and Mitsubishi HC Capital Energy launched a private fund investing in rooftop and ground-mounted solar facilities.
Power and environmental value generated by the portfolio will be supplied to Nomura Real Estate Group properties through structures including off-site and virtual PPAs.
